I have a dilemma. The great Nurse v. doctor debate. I want to do medicine and I really want to work in the ER. Working as a nurse, I get to have a smaller pool of patients but working as a doctor, I will have more responsibility. Any advice to help me make a decision? Don’t nurses and doctors do pretty much the same amount of work in the ER? - anon
Whoa whoa whoa back up there a minute.
First of all, “amount of work” has no place in the doctor vs. nurse decision. Both doctors and nurses work extremely hard (especially in the ER), though the nature of that work is very different. You’re talking apples and oranges. Plus, who knows if you’ll actually end up working in an ER? You might be like the vast majority of students who end up changing their career goals at some point in their schooling.
Rather, what you should be considering in your decisionmaking is the type of work doctors and nurses do. Think about your own goals and what you enjoy, and go with the side that has that.
